May 30 - ICS' Sally Jewell Recognized with International Award
The The International Organization of Multiple Sclerosis Nurses (IOMSN) presented its Thumbs Up Award to ICS’ Sally Jewell at the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers dinner on May 30, 2009. IOMSN presents the Thumbs Up Award to people who are instrumental in advocating and promoting multiple sclerosis (MS) nursing.
“When I first got the notice about my award, I was really busy and didn’t really realize what it was,” said Jewell, who serves as director of regional operations for ICS. “Later when I looked at it again, I was totally shocked and just absolutely surprised. I couldn’t believe I had won an international award.” According to the IOMSN, Jewell is the recipient of this year’s award as a result of her efforts to broaden the scope and vision of MS nursing. Among her other achievements, she worked to establish and lead a group of nurses who reach out to MS patients and help improve the quality of their lives. “Sally has inspired nurses to become MS specialists and provide a greater level of care for people with the disease,” Amy Perrin Ross, president of IOMSN, said.“Sally is a role model and leader who always conveys a positive message to her patients, their families and the greater MS nursing community.”
Jewell, a certified nurse for over 30 years, has been with ABSG since 2002. Her position at ICS allows her to focus her efforts on developing and managing programs for pharmaceutical companies and patient support. “When we first started this kind of nursing support for products, it was so new,” she said. “Now the whole industry works like this, and it is incredible to be at the forefront of all of the change.” Her involvement with patient and healthcare educational programs began in 1992, and she has specialized in MS since 1994. Jewell currently holds the MSCN certification. Coupled with her work for MS, she has a passion and clinical expertise for oncology nursing as well. “I really enjoy what I do,” Jewell said. “I love being a part of such a wonderful staff that touches so many thousands of lives and are so dedicated to what they do.” For Jewell, every day brings new obstacles to tackle and stresses to tend to, but her humble, can-do attitude stands as one of her award-winning qualities.
“Before I got the award, I said to the person next to me that I couldn’t imagine what they will say because no one asked me anything beforehand,” she said. “It didn’t dawn on me until that time the influence of the things I’ve done. It was overwhelming and amazing. When you’re doing what you like to do and are happy, you don’t realize how many people it impacts.”
